JEMS® Movement A.R.C. Course 1
Essential Trunk and Pelvis
- Brain science, pain science, mind and body: seamlessly link the sciences of biomechanics and neurology, psychology and emotion, and their effects on posture and movement.
- Moving from pathology (where the problem is) to function (how and why it is happening): using movement to identify the mechanisms behind the patient’s presentation.
- The visual and analytical skills for Functional Movement Testing, what each test tells you, and how to use the tests to create a specific, targeted action plan for rehabilitation.
- The key “seed” movements and force management strategies which underpin motor function and its potential for development in the trunk and lower limb.
- How to use reflex activity and neurosensory cueing to achieve automatic postural and movement responses.
- Integrating the seed movements and progressing them into programmes which systematically address the needs of patients at all levels.
- Building flexible, individualised pathways for acute, post-surgical and low level presentations through to elite sports performance.
- Motor learning: learn how and when to cue for best effect, using the techniques used by master coaches.
- Sensory awareness as a key factor in training and patient engagement.
- Combining exercise approaches to enhance movement behaviours and muscle patterning at increased load and skill demands.
- Embedding the techniques in clinical scenarios to make them immediately applicable.

Joanne Elphinston
The creator of JEMS®,
Joanne Elphinston, is a leading performance consultant in elite sport and the
performing arts, a practicing physiotherapist specialising in chronic
disorders, and a respected international lecturer and author in the fields of
movement and rehabilitation.
Drawing from the fields of biomechanics, motor learning, neuroscience, philosophy and psychology, Joanne’s passion for exploring and stimulating beautiful movement in her clientele has led her from her native Australia to the USA, UK and Sweden, working with an extraordinary range of people, from children to the elderly through to high performance athletes.
Her 2019 book “The Power and the Grace: A Professional’s Guide to Ease and Efficiency in Functional Movement” and her 2013 book, “Stability, Sport and Performance Movement: Practical Biomechanics and Systematic Training for Movement Efficacy and Injury Prevention” 2nd ed., provide a good introduction to some of the concepts presented on the course.

Frequently asked questions
What is Movement ARC?
Movement ARC (Analysis, Rehabilitation, and Coaching) is the ground breaking foundation
programme for learning the JEMS®
approach, a holistic philosophy of rehabilitation and training which identifies
and effortlessly integrates the multiple factors which influence our movement. Movement is more than a
functional expression of the body: it is a deeply personal story that the brain
is telling. Movement ART teaches you how to make sense of that story with
each patient, what to look and listen for, where to begin, and how to assess and
progress patients across the age and functional spectrum effectively and truly
holistically.
Who is this programme for?
Movement ARC is for clinically based
rehabilitation practitioners who feel deeply that there is more to movement
than just muscles, mechanics and motor control.
From elite sport
to chronic pain management, and every career stage, from newly qualified to the
verge of retirement, our participants join us because they are motivated to
address the whole person in the treatment interaction with greater clarity,
confidence and creativity through an expanded understanding of the role of
movement.
What are the pre-requisite qualifications?
Movement ARC is designed for rehabilitation practitioners with a medically based qualification such as: physiotherapists; osteopaths; chiropractors; and graduate sports rehabilitators (GSR) who are a member of BASRaT, as the course requires an understanding of manual treatment techniques, and clinical reasoning processes for a spectrum of ages and physical presentations. If you are unsure as to whether your professional qualifications match these pre-requisites, please get in touch and we can discuss the best course option for you.
Why should I join this programme?
This is a unique personal and professional development programme that gives you the time to immerse yourself in the learning. Most importantly, you directly apply the work with patients as you move through the programme, knowing that you have the support of the teaching team to explore and refine your skills as you go. It is a purposefully designed and steadily paced opportunity for clinical professionals to fully explore and embed your learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Don't take our word for it - see what our past participants have to say about JEMS®
What will I learn?
Movement ARC equips you with the knowledge,
skills and deep movement understanding to assess and treat functionally,
specifically and confidently, using clear concepts, sound clinical reasoning
and structured progression.
- Get the science: You will learn the connections between biomechanics and neurology, psychology and emotion, and their effects on posture and movement.
- Develop an “expert eye” and learn simple, relevant movement tests to uncover the patient’s natural strategies for force management. Address the cause, not just the symptom, and enhance your manual therapy treatments with functional movement integration.
- Incorporate embodiment principles: engage your patients to identify and sense their own patterns, and cue movement more meaningfully.
- Discover a fresh approach to posture, based on natural reflexes and sensory cues, and create a greater sense of ease, elasticity and freedom.
- Become an effective coach: create an interaction dynamic which supports optimal learning, maintains patient focus and boosts motivation.
- Transform your patient relationships: Learn to foster a collaborative process of shared responsibility and discovery that invites the patient to be the driver in their own process.
- Use clinical reasoning to identify the themes that link where the patient is now and where they need to go to meet their functional demands.
- Progress, adapt and vary exercise techniques with precision and creativity to create individualised, relevant programmes that are both meaningful and fun for the patient.
- Guide your patients into moving with greater ease, poise, power and efficiency using simple concepts that they can understand and take ownership of.
What happens after the programme?
Movement
ARC is offered in two parts, Programme 1 and Programme 2. Each programme runs
for approximately 16 weeks and is delivered in a blended learning format, using a variety of techniques to support your learning.
You will finish the programme with confidence, capability and enthusiasm! After completing both programmes, and a 6 month period for practice in your own clinical settings, you will be eligible to apply for Certification.
- Programme 1 comprehensively establishes the JEMS® foundation concepts in all of the areas listed above, with emphasis on the trunk and lower body up to intermediate functional level.
- Programme 2 continues your skill development in all of these areas and extends them to increasingly dynamic lower body applications, polishing your clinical reasoning and observation skills, and applying all of this knowledge to the fascinating and versatile upper limb.
You will finish the programme with confidence, capability and enthusiasm! After completing both programmes, and a 6 month period for practice in your own clinical settings, you will be eligible to apply for Certification.
